Have you ever imagined that there is more to a horse than riding it for sport or recreational purposes? Horse riding always sounds like a perfect weekend getaway activity - right? Well, it is, and unbeknown to many, horses are remarkable for people with disabilities and illnesses.
Horses are deemed as great therapeutic partners as they can mirror and respond to human behaviour. “Horses respond within the same spectrum of physical and emotional responses that govern their behaviour allowing insight into the inner psychology of the client” highlights Joshua Thaisen global health journalist and documentary photographer.
As part of our CSR initiatives, Edgars Zimbabwe donated $1000 to the Healing with horses Therapeutic Centre. The Centre offers therapy to disadvantaged children and adults with disabilities. Currently the centre is catering for children from Sandra Jones Centre and King George VI Centre.
Horses possess profound therapeutic powers when interacting with disadvantaged human beings. They assist in human rehabilitation programmes known as equine facilitated therapy. The Healing with horses Therapeutic Centre`s horse riding therapy programme is focused on improving many different disabilities and illnesses including
- Cerebral Palsy
- Down Syndrome
- Vision Impairment
- Post Traumatic Disorder
- Physical and Emotional Abuse
Why Horse Riding?
There are tremendous psychological benefits that horses have on human beings. Horse therapy sessions vary depending on the condition being treated. The healing journey involves horse selection, (helps create bond, boost confidence), grooming walking and riding the horses.
“Simply taking adults or children with disabilities into an outdoor environment can start the therapeutic process, as they will be interested and distracted from their day to day life,” says Frank Thorogood, UK based farm owner and avid fan of the role that horses play in therapy.
